Skip Bin Hire & Waste Management Facts
How long can I have the skip bin for?
Standard hire period is 5 days unless other arrangements have been made. Go to our www.silverfoxbins.co.nz/faq.htmlOrder a Bin Online page. Longer hire period is an additional $10/day. Excess weight costs apply at 32 cents per kg. It is also common for a bin to go overweight as you can never gauge what a bin will weigh when at a tipping site. Charges are in alignment with Envirowaste and Waste Management tipping site charges.
What size skip bins are available?
The range of available sizes to choose from are: 3m3 Hardfill, 4.5m3, 6m3 and 9m3 General.
What sized skip bin is best for different jobs?
From our experience we have found that the sizes often required for typical jobs are as follows:
There are other considerations also such as the size of the area where you will put the skip and the width of the truck relative to your drive way.
Please note: These estimates are a guide only and the customer is responsible for the choice of the most appropriate skip size.
- Bathroom renovation - 3 to 4.5 cubic metres
- Kitchen renovation – 4.5 cubic metres
- Moving house (large clean-up) – 6 to 9 cubic metres
- Moving house (small clean-up) - 3 to 4.5 cubic metres
- Excavation project - multiply length x width x depth to get the volume excavated then multiply again by 1.3 to allow for packing inefficiency. Note: Soil tends to weigh around 1.5 tonnes per cubic metre.
- Demolished brickwork or concrete - multiply length x width x depth to get the volume demolished then multiply again by 1.5 to allow for packing inefficiency. Note: Brickwork and concrete tend to weigh around 1.5 tonnes per cubic metre.

To what level can I fill a skip?
Please avoid hassles and costs by ensuring the skips are never loaded above the rim. It is illegal to transport an overfilled skip and drivers are subject to heavy fines and demerit points if caught doing so. If a skip is overfilled you will be given the option to hire an additional skip, or to remove the excess material. All labour costs incurred by you will be your own responsibility.
If there is nobody on site when the collection occurs, the driver will, at his own discretion attempt to remove the excess material and place it in a pile as close as possible to the skip’s location.
In cases where the excess is not removed and the skip remains for extended periods, the customer may become liable for additional charges including rental, labour costs and additional transport costs if it becomes necessary for us to unload the excess.

What happens if passers-by overload the skip or put prohibited materials in it?
As part of the booking terms and conditions, you as the customer are in possession of the skip and are responsible for what goes in it. Therefore, you will be responsible for any costs arising if anyone puts something in the skip that is not allowed or overloads it.
The same applies if you are agreeing with a neighbour, allowing them to put items in your bin. You are responsible for the weight and suggest costs be shared amongst yourselves, especially in the common case of an Overweight/excess charge that we become aware of, once tipped.

Can I put asbestos in a skip?
Asbestos must not be put in any skip hired from Silverfox Bins or its partnership companies.
Asbestos can be found in many materials in houses built up until the late 1980s. If in doubt as to whether or not a material might contain asbestos, please consult an expert before placing it in a skip.
If asbestos is found in a skip prior to removal from a customer’s property, the skip will not be removed until properly dealt with.
If asbestos is found in the skip after it has been tipped either at landfill or at a transfer station, high decontamination costs and possibly very heavy penalties may be imposed. The customer will be responsible for the payment of all costs immediately.

Where can a skip bin be placed?
You can always put a skip within your own property subject to space requirements. There must be no obstacles obstructing movement of the truck, lifting gear (Gantry) or bin(s). It is the customer's responsibility to choose a suitable spot to place the bin(s). Silverfox Bins Ltd does not accept any responsibility for damage caused to services whether underground or overhead. Our skip trucks offload a skip from the rear using two parallel bars (Gantry). NOTE: There are also limitations to where you can get a skip into. For our own safety, we strongly recommend you let us know ahead of time, of any dogs on the property, steep drops, overhead wires or cables or other hazards. We are not responsible for any damage due to no information given prior, or lack of warnings regarding driveway hazards that may put the driver at risk.
Can skip bins be placed on the road or verge?
If you need to put the skip on the road or grass verge, different rules apply. It is the customer's responsibility to get authorisation from the Auckland City Council if you wish to have the bin placed on the road or grass verge. Be aware that locals are very good at helping you fill your bin at your cost also. It is very common and anything that goes in the bin, is at your responsibility and cost.
What happens if the skip is picked up and it wasn't full yet?
When you hire a skip bin, you specify the collection date and it will be collected on that date unless you subsequently request otherwise. If a driver finds a skip, substantially empty, he will make attempts to have the customer contacted, but ultimately will have the discretion to remove the skip if he sees fit. If the driver is turned away on arrival, the customer will be responsible for payment of any call out fee incurred for the additional trip.
What happens if the skip is turned away on delivery or cannot be placed?
If the skip cannot be delivered for any reason, other than the fault of Silverfox Bins, or our local supplier, or the driver, the customer will be liable for any callout fees incurred and will be entitled to either a refund of the balance, or for the balance to be credited towards the hire of a different skip.
What if no one is home when the bin is delivered?
Provide detailed instructions for bin placement when ordering. Please remember to think about safety when looking to site your bin. Look for any obstacles that may restrict the trucks access such as power lines, phone lines, tree branches etc.
